Onboarding and counselling
Onboarding for doctoral candidates in the social sciences and humanities
+++ Start in October 2025 +++
Welcome as a new doctoral candidate in the social sciences or humanities at the UOL! We are delighted that you have found your way to 3GO, the Graduate School for subjects in Faculties I to IV.
With our onboarding programme, we support you in actively shaping your transition to the doctoral phase. The aim of this semester-long process is for you to work on your dissertation with a great deal of curiosity, joy and vigour, while at the same time familiarising yourself with the university culture in the best possible way.
The individual challenges will vary depending on whether you have just completed your studies, are coming back from parental leave, have been through a period of illness or have gained academic appointments outside the university. In addition to your academic qualifications (regulated by the respective doctoral degree regulations), the relationship with your supervisor (regulated by the supervision agreement) will play a major role in the coming years. Perhaps you are also preparing for a teaching position (regulated by the employment contract) and you are wondering what is meant by participation in university self-administration.
3GO onboarding not only clarifies the doctoral degree procedure and the formal framework conditions for the doctoral, supervisory and employment relationship. Rather, we understand academia as a (mouldable) world of its own with many written, but even more unwritten rules that academics acquire during their doctoral phase. At the centre of the modularised programme are therefore elements of coaching, mentoring and peer counselling/collegial exchange, which you put together individually over the course of a semester.
