IT2School - Discover IT together
IT and Computing Science are everywhere, but often hidden. That's why, since 2014, we have been continuously developing a collection of materials that pupils at different school levels can use to recognise, explore, try out and playfully discover Computing Science. They become experts who use IT creatively, invent new things and realise their own ideas. The aim is to teach Computing Science in a playful and understandable way. Children and young people should understand and scrutinise IT systems, but also actively shape them themselves.
To this end, we are providing a growing number of modules in the Wissensfabrik's IT2School project with OFFIS e.V. in co-operation with the University of Oldenburg, in which pupils and teachers can explore typical IT topics and implement new, creative ideas. Both analogue media such as cardboard and modelling clay and digital teaching aids such as smartphones and microcontrollers are used in lessons.
The project consists of eight basic modules, as well as advanced and extension modules and modules on artificial intelligence. Two method modules (project method and design thinking) are also available. They can be put together flexibly according to the wishes and interests of the teachers and students, as well as the company representatives involved.
The modules focus on the fundamental topics of Computing Science such as communication, programming, understanding networks, the interaction of hardware and software components and the presentation of information and are prepared for grades 4 to 10. Seven modules on the topic of artificial intelligence have been available since summer 2022. The modules will be updated and restructured in 2025 and 2026.
In contrast to other activities to promote IT/computing science in schools, which often focus on one aspect (e.g. CS unplugged, programming, physical computing or computational thinking) or only provide materials, this project is the only one that takes a holistic view of computing science and aims to bring a comprehensive range of IT topics into schools together with company representatives.
You have two options for downloading the materials:
- Via the website of Wissensfabrik e.V.
- or directly (without further explanation) on GitHub.
We are particularly pleased that the IT2School material is being used in the "Computing Science and Technology at Primary Schools" pilot programme of the state of Lower Saxony. In the spirit of the Creative Commons, in addition to the project documentation, further revisions and suggestions for additions are also available online: www.infgsnds.de
