ChemOL for primary school children
ChemOL for primary school children
The ChemOL (Chemistry in Oldenburg) school laboratory is known far beyond the borders of Oldenburg. The Chemistry Didactics working group at the University of Oldenburg offers children of primary school age the opportunity to learn about scientific phenomena and investigate them experimentally in a real chemistry laboratory one or two days a week (excluding school holidays).
Over 750 school classes have visited the ChemOL laboratory so far and gained their first insights into the "fascination of chemistry". The experiments and their simple explanations, which deal with the topics of fire, water, substances in everyday life, air and other gases, are enthusiastically received. Experienced staff and specially qualified students supervise the children as they experiment in groups of two or three. All children are given lab coats, safety goggles and a name badge. At the end of the three-hour programme, spectacular experiments such as the effervescent powder rocket are demonstrated. The aim of ChemOL is also to help primary school teachers overcome their fear of chemistry and physics experiments and to support them in introducing children to science.
The Northwest Chemistry Teacher Training Centre (formerly Bremen/Oldenburg) has already conducted more than 300 teacher training courses with primary school teachers and educators. The success of the ChemOL concept, which is supported not only by the state of Lower Saxony but also by the Chemical Industry Fund and the Chemistry Teacher Training Centre, is evidenced by the many enthusiastic letters and the high demand.
