How are sounds created?

How are sounds created?

Unimaginable: a life without music

Music is as old as mankind, but is created anew every day. It makes us happy or sad. It carries us away, makes us dance or calms us down. It touches us at our core and we can hardly escape its effect.

Music is like a language that everyone in the world can understand. Language consists of words, music consists of sounds. But how are these sounds created? What does the sound of a violin have in common with the bow and arrow of a Stone Age hunter? Why do we hear the flapping of a bee's wings as a buzz, but not the fluttering of a butterfly? How do musical instruments work?

We want to explore these physical basics of music and also learn how to build simple musical instruments ourselves.
