Are bacteria our friends?
Are bacteria our friends?
Prof Dr Heribert Cypionka
Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment
We see them and do not hear them, and yet there are always millions of them around us and even in our bodies. We eat many foods that are flavoured by them. However, we usually only think about them when we are ill: Bacteria. They are the oldest living organisms and have many unique abilities. Some double in size every 10 minutes, others sleep for 1,000 years. Some eat iron, others are magnetic, still others emit light. Most species are still undiscovered. In the sea and on land, the activity of bacteria ensures that all living organisms have favourable living conditions. In this lecture, we want to get to know bacteria and their way of life and show how they can be researched using modern methods. If you are already interested in looking at bacteria, why not visit the microbiological garden on the Internet: www.mikrobiologischer-garten.de
