Why did sport come about and why are there always new sports?

People have always exercised - but it wasn't always the case that they did it in their free time and called it "sport". If we look back, we see that gyms and sports fields with horizontal bars and jumping pits haven't been around that long. Skateboards and inline skates are even newer.
Why did sport come about and why do people keep inventing new sports? Why do some people enjoy gymnastics in a club, for example, while others prefer to skateboard with friends on the street? Finally, what do you need to know and be able to do in order to play "your" sport? When we do sport, we particularly feel the influence of gravity. Sometimes it's not so easy to keep your balance: when doing gymnastics, it often takes effort to "keep your posture", and when skating, we like to jeopardise our balance for fun. To investigate how well people can keep their balance, you can use a "measuring gyroscope". We use experiments to show you how important a sense of balance is when moving around in sport and everyday life. Moderator: Anke Genius, NDR
