Teaching materials

These teaching materials are designed for technology lessons in years 8, 9 and 10. The focus of all units is on teaching aspects of sustainability from a technical perspective. The materials can be used independently of each other, but it is advisable to gradually incorporate the different subject areas into the lessons in order to visualise as broad a spectrum as possible and give pupils the opportunity to approach ESD from different perspectives.

The teaching unit for Year 8 introduces the concept of sustainability using the example of artisanal and industrial paper production. This topic is particularly suitable as an introduction because the concept of sustainability was first coined in the field of forestry and therefore enables a historical categorisation. The teaching unit is structured in such a way that schools without a technology department can also carry out the lessons. No technical knowledge or skills are required. The unit was designed for approx. 13 double lessons.

The materials for grade 9 deal with the development of mobility from the point of view of sustainability. This unit requires a basic knowledge of wood and electrical engineering. Different levels of difficulty are offered for the construction of a Morse device so that differentiations can also be made within the group. Approximately 12 double lessons are planned for this unit.

In year 10, the focus is on the evaluation of renewable energies from a sustainability perspective. The teaching of this subject area takes approx. 9 double periods and requires prior knowledge, which is explained in more detail in the introduction to the teaching unit.

Smaller concepts are offered for the topics of book printing, bookbinding and building and living for project days at schools and regional environmental centres.
