Musical Identities in Music Education

MUSICAL IDENTITIES, as a specific field of study, have captured the interest of music psychology and music education research in previous years. This talk will initially present an overview of scientific research related to musical identities published over the previous two decades drawing on insights from the sociology and the psychology of music, in order to flesh out the value of understanding musical identities within music education. To this end, the themes of “identities-in-music” and “music-in-identities” are used (MacDonald & Saarikallio, 2022) in an attempt to organize the multiplicity and diversity of approaches employed when studying musical identities with musical and non-musical populations. Special reference is made to musical preferences, the role of music technologies in the formation of a musical self, as well as ways in which informal learning environments may inform musical identities. 

Throughout our meeting, you are invited to actively participate and engage in discussions, in order to explore, through specific techniques, your own musical and multiple identities, consider how these might inform your teaching practice and reflect on your own musical journeys and careers to date.

Note: No preparation is required for attending the talk – literature will be provided at the end for further reading and inquisitive minds! Participants are encouraged to keep their camera open over the 2-hour session, as there will be interaction with the tutor and peers.

Dr. Angeliki Triantafyllaki

Angeliki Triantafyllaki is Assistant Professor of Music Education, Technology and Teacher Education at the Department of Music Studies, NKUA. She holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (PhD, MPhil), NKUA (BA), and the National Conservatoire of Athens (Piano Soloist Diploma). She has worked on international and national research projects (UK HEA, European Commission FP7-ICT, Thalis) and has secured competitive funding for individual postdoctoral research (British Academy Visiting Fellowship, Greek State Scholarship Foundation). She serves on committees and editorial boards of international organisations and journals in music education. She has been teaching in HE since 2010 at Masters and Bachelor levels.
