European Research Network on Education in Prison [English]
The European Research Network on Education in Prison brings together a diverse community of researchers and practitioners from across Europe. Representing a wide range of academic disciplines and professional fields, members of the network engage with the complex issues of education and pedagogy within correctional institutions. Their work spans both theoretical perspectives and practical approaches, aiming to deepen understanding and improve educational opportunities for individuals in prison settings.
Background
The network was initiated in 2025 by Prof. Dr. Jens Borchert (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences) and Dr. Annika Krause (University of Oldenburg), operates independently and is presently organized and guided by them.
The initiative aims to connect researchers from across Europe, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the field of correctional education.
The fundamental purpose of the network is to:
- Network with leading researchers and practitioners throughout Europe
- Share insights and experiences regarding education within prison settings
Collaborate on innovative ideas to ensure that research findings are effectively transferred into correctional institutions
Education in Prison
Education in prison, as we understand it, includes:
- Formal and informal learning environments in prison
- Basic education and literacy courses (including language courses for non-native speakers)
- Vocational training and professional qualifications in various trades, enabling people in prison to gain recognized certifications
- General and secondary education opportunities
- (Special) educational needs
- Digital literacy and e-learning platforms
