3GO Newsletter June 2026
And there he is!
June will be the central event month of the entire summer semester
We start with our eagerly awaited Doctoral Candidates' Day 2026 on 11 June. In the evening, we will hand over the baton for the 1st Digital Humanities Day at the University of Oldenburg. Just one week later, the legendary Science Slam will take place on 17 June.
Of course, we also provide our members with workshops to help them progress with their own dissertation. We particularly recommend two workshops on academic writing.
Workshop "Systematic and targeted revision of monographic dissertations" (two online dates)
Thursday, 4 June, and Thursday, 25 June, 9:00-12:00 with Dr Stefanie Sievers-Glotzbach
Are you in the middle of the writing process or in the final spurt of your monographic dissertation and would now like to revise your texts so that they are convincing in terms of content, argumentation and language? And you are wondering which approach makes the most sense?
This two-part workshop provides you with knowledge and strategies for revising academic texts systematically. The focus is on the monograph text type. In the two short workshops, you will try out strategies for the step-by-step revision of raw texts with regard to content, argumentation, reading style, language and academic style. The revision methods presented can be applied directly to your own dissertation texts.
Revising academic texts I: Content and argumentation
Revising academic texts II: Reading style, language and academic style
Workshop "Planning the cumulative dissertation and putting it on paper as a doctoral exposé" (two dates)
Thursday, 18 June, and Thursday, 2 July, 9:00-16:00 (V03) with Dr Stefanie Sievers-Glotzbach
Are you at the beginning of your doctoral project and would like to write a cumulative dissertation? And you are wondering how you can best approach the planning of your cumulative dissertation? What do you need to bear in mind and what's the deal with the jacket text (also known as the "introduction", "synopsis" or "outline")?
In this workshop, we will discuss important formal and content-related questions about the cumulative dissertation. With the help of guiding questions and visualisation methods, you will develop or review an initial plan for your research papers and an overarching common thread for the dissertation (workshop part 1). In the second part of the workshop, we will work on the central elements of an exposé for cumulative dissertations. The aim is to develop a clear and realistic plan for your doctoral project. You will learn how to write a doctoral exposé and tailor it to the interests of your addressees (such as doctoral supervisors, scholarship donors or graduate programmes). In the workshop, you can develop a text framework for your own doctoral exposé or receive peer feedback on already written drafts.
Doctoral candidates' day on 11 June
This year's Doctoral Candidates' Day of the Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities (3GO) is dedicated to the main topic of Digital Humanities. It is linked with a joint keynote to the 1st Oldenburg Digital Humanities Day, which will mainly take place on 12 June (see additional article in the newsletter). The homepage of the doctoral candidate day offers current information on the programme and registration.
1st Oldenburg Digital Humanities Day on 12 June
The University of Oldenburg is bringing its digital humanities community together - over two days, in one room, with one common question:
Where do we stand - and where is the journey going?
The Digital Humanities (DH) are at the interface between the humanities and digital technologies. They bring methods of Computing Science, data analysis and visualisation to subjects such as history, linguistics, philosophy or art history and thus enable completely new ways of answering old questions or even posing new questions in the first place, creating interdisciplinary dialogues and synergy effects and generating new insights through co-operation.
The 1st DH Day offers a platform for exchange on current projects, new methods and the future of Digital Humanities at the University of Oldenburg - open to all researchers and interested parties from Oldenburg and the surrounding area. Detailed information on the programme and registration can be found on the event homepage.
