Auseinandersetzungen mit Zeitlichkeit als strukturierendem Ordnungssystem sind in den Queer Studies in den vergangenen Jahren zu einem zentralen Bereich der Theoriebildung geworden. Hier werden zeitliche Logiken als effektvoll aufgezeigt, Zeitlichkeit wird als machtvolle Struktur in Bezug auf Geschlechter, Begehren und Sexualitäten herausgestellt, und nicht zuletzt werden im Hinblick auf die normativen Aspekte von Zeitlichkeiten Kritiken und Interventionen entwickelt. Medien werden in diesen Analysen zu Gegenständen der Fragen nach Normierungen, aber auch zu Vermittlern von Utopien und Dialogen durch die Zeit, zu Störungen und radikalen Gegenpositionen. Im Panel sollen Fragen nach Zeitlichkeit in den Queer Studies am Beispiel von Bewegungsgeschichte(n) und Film exemplifiziert werden. Welche Formen der Intervention schlagen die Queer Studies in der Hinwendung zu Zeitlichkeit vor und in welchem Verhältnis stehen diese zur Tradition, filmisch Bewegungs-geschichte(n) zu erzählen?

Von der grundlegenden Beobachtung ausgehend, dass zeitliche Strukturierungen den Film als zeitbasiertes Medium ‚par excellence’ bestimmen, soll analysiert werden, in welcher Weise etwa Stillstand, Serialität, Wiederholung, Dauer oder Linearität über das Medium Film wirkmächtig geworden sind. Im Hinblick auf die Möglichkeit, queere Bewegungsgeschich-te(n) im Medium Film zu erzählen, ist dann die zentrale Frage des Panels: Wie stark sind queere Bewegungsgeschichten an ihre filmische Konstitution in Bezug auf Narrative von Zeitlichkeit gebunden? Gibt es im Film die Möglichkeit, eine Queer Temporality herzustellen, oder sind auch queere Bewegungsfilme von normativen Zeitlichkeiten filmischer Narrative bestimmt? Welche alternativen Entwürfe von Bewegungsgeschichte und ihren filmischen Formen lassen sich in den Queer Studies finden, welche Filme arbeiten über radikalisierte Konzepte von Zeit auch an Bewegungsgeschichte(n)? Und welche Rolle spielen intermediale ästhetische Strategien bei der Thematisierung von Zeit und Zeitlichkeiten in Bezug auf Film?

Temporalities, film and movement

Temporality has become a major topic within queer studies in recent years. Discussions about temporal logics have shown them to be effective and expose how temporality functions as a powerful structure in terms of gender, desire and sexualities. Moreover, critiques of and interventions into the normative aspects of temporalities are currently being developed. These analyses question how media relate to issues of standardization. Different media have, throughout the ages, served to convey utopian visions, facilitate dialogues, create interferences and pose radical counter-positions. This panel will explore some paradigmatic questions of temporality within queer studies, focusing in particular on film and histories of queer movements. What kinds of interventions do queer analyses of temporalities suggest? How do these interventions relate to the tradition of relating the histories of different movements through film?

Starting from the observation that temporal structures define film as a time-based medium ‘par excellence’, the panel seeks to analyze how particular modes of time such as standstill, serialization, repetition, duration and linearity have had a long-lasting influence thanks to the medium of film.

When asking into the possible ways of telling the hi/stories of queer movements with the medium of film, other central questions of this panel might include: How strongly are these histories of queer movements tied to their cinematic structure being based on temporal narratives? What possibilities are there for creating queer temporalities within film? And to what extent are documentaries that deal with queer movements also determined by cinematic conventions and the normative temporalities of cinematic narratives? How might the histories of movements and their cinematic forms be conceptualized in other ways? And can alternative examples be found in queer studies? Which films make use of radical conceptions of time in order to rework how the stories of queer movements are narrated? What relevance do intermedial aesthetic strategies have in tackling issues of time and temporality in film?
