Audiovisual media in practice, theory and mediation

The master's degree programme in Integrated Media is a practice-oriented degree programme in media studies. It provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in working with media. The centre focuses on visual and audio media, their aesthetic characteristics, historical developments, economic and legal foundations, as well as current challenges. Furthermore, the convergence of image and sound in contemporary media culture is analysed, creatively implemented and tested. The degree programme pursues a cultural studies-oriented approach to media research, which regards artistic and creative practice as an integral part of a comprehensive education that, firstly, brings together the fields of art and music and, secondly, views theory and practice as mutually enriching approaches to media.

Since the winter semester 2007/08, the degree programme has been jointly offered by the Institute of Art and Visual Culture and the Institute of Music. There are long-standing co-operations with the Haus für Medienkunst in Oldenburg (co-operation agreement in place since 2007) and local broadcasters (in Bremen,‘Oeins’, Oldenburg), as well as regional partners in media, cultural and economic policy (including Oldenburg Economic Development Agency,‘cre8oldenburg’).

This interdisciplinary master's degree programme, which takes an integrated approach to auditory and visual media, prepares students for professional careers in contemporary media culture, whilst also equipping them with the skills to analyse and reflect theoretically on the aesthetics, economics and politics of media.

The Master’s programme equips students for a wide range of roles within cultural institutions and project contexts relating to media production and dissemination (e.g. radio and television broadcasters, media and web agencies, media art festivals, film productions, art and film education, curatorial practice, music production, music labels, etc.). The dynamic nature of these fields of work requires, in particular, independence, initiative, the ability to work in a team and a willingness to take risks.
