The curriculum covers both media art and commercially oriented media productions and processes. The programme is geared towards professional practice in various areas of media work. The specialist Master’s degree programme is designed as an interdisciplinary degree programme and is offered by two institutes within School III: the Institute of Music and the Institute of Art and Visual Culture.

Study programme

The Master of Arts in Integrated Media degree programme runs for four semesters and commences in the winter semester. The degree programme comprises 120 credit points (CP), which are earned across a total of seven modules. Each module is worth 15 CP. The Master’s degree module (Master’s thesis: 27 CP and colloquium: 3 CP) counts as 30 CP. The degree programme concludes with the award of a Master of Arts degree.

All modules are studied during the 1st to 3rd semesters. In the second or third semester, students have the option of spending time abroad at a university offering similar degree programmes, or of transferring to another German university or higher education institution to take advantage of specialised courses (e.g. film music production at the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg, Cultural Informatics/University of Lüneburg, Media Production/Cologne Academy of Media Arts). In the fourth semester, students complete the final Master’s module, comprising a Master’s thesis and a colloquium.

Further information on the degree programme, a sample study plan and the admissions regulations can be found here.

Module overview

The core areas of the Integrated Media Master's subject are the art and music-related courses offered by the Institute of Music and the Institute of Cultural Studies, in particular in the modules Artistic-Technical Media Competence and Media Experiments and Mediation. The focus here is on exercises in multimedia, image/video, editing/sound and sound processing, which result in the creation of artistic-technical productions and/or scientific-artistic works.

Media theory with a focus on visual media or auditory media is offered as a compulsory elective module. In order to enable university diversity and necessary specialisation, one of the modules mentioned can be selected, whereby each of the modules also includes intermedia aspects.

Courses on media economics and media law are organised as guest lectures and supplemented by courses offered by School II Computing Science, Economics and Law.

The Media Analysis module is offered as a profile module. It focuses on the complex forms of analysis of visual and auditory elements in specific media contexts (e.g. film music, sound design, radio play music, music videos, musicals, performances, theatre productions, video installations, integrative phenomena of media art).

The area of specialisation (foreign languages, key qualifications) is part of the curriculum. Internships and the accompanying courses are assigned to this area.
