Prospects in the north-west: training and energy

Initial situation

The energy transition is a complex social challenge that involves a complete switch to renewable energies and a comprehensive restructuring of the energy supply. It has a significant economic impact, particularly due to rising energy prices, carbon taxes and the need for extensive investment in infrastructure. A central aspect of the energy transition is the connection of different energy sectors through sector coupling. Storage technologies such as batteries and hydrogen play a key role here. Despite advances in battery storage, hydrogen is a key technology for the long-term storage and utilisation of surplus energy.

The north-west metropolitan region is of central importance for the success of the energy transition in Germany. To name a few keywords: Offshore wind energy, energy from biomass, hydrogen, construction of power lines and pipelines, landing of energy in the harbours, energy saving measures. This results in an increasing demand for skilled labour from companies and attractive academic appointments for young people.

Aim of the project

The aim of the project is therefore to

  • to get young people interested in apprenticeships related to the energy transition in the metropolitan region,
  • to support companies in recruiting skilled labour,
  • to accompany the development of the north-west metropolitan region,
  • support teachers in integrating the topic into academic appointments and technology and business lessons,
  • bring companies and schools into contact.

In order to achieve these goals, the Technical Education working group and the Institute for Economics Education are developing interactive learning materials for academic appointments and for technology and economics lessons at general and vocational schools. The focus here is particularly on promoting the exchange between schools and companies on academic appointments through explorations, expert interviews, internships, etc.

In future, the teaching materials, didactic handouts and background information on the energy transition in the metropolitan region will be available on this website.
