Language-sensitive technology lessons
In this new project with the working title "Language-sensitive technology lessons", teaching content and methods are being developed to enable language-sensitive subject teaching. Specifically, the aim is to address the current social situation with regard to migration and flight and to enable children and young people to participate in the classroom and thus lay the foundations for participation in social life.
During a three-month trial phase (January to March 2017), teaching units will be carried out by students of the subject of technology (module: TEC180) at the IGS. Pupils are taught basic manual and technical skills one morning a week - activities that contribute to increased creative skills and promote autonomy. At the same time, this area has an impact on the field of vocational preparation by laying the foundations for training in craft and technical professions, which many migrants have only rudimentary or no knowledge of. In view of the fact that many of the students have to learn the basics in one to two years that are generally familiar to their peers (handling tools and machines, calculating areas, measurements, etc.), this is a necessary step towards their future academic appointments in addition to learning the (subject) language. The focus is placed on the area of "measurement" as an example. Pupils are introduced to the use of measuring instruments (ruler, calipers, protractor, etc.) and learn how to read and transfer technical drawings.
For the project, the Technical Education working group is working with two cooperation partners: IGS Kreyenbrück, in whose language learning class the methods and content to be developed will be used, and the Regional Environmental Education Centre Oldenburg (RUZ), which will also develop materials in consultation with us in terms of content and methods and will implement them with the language learning class.
