- Heinz Neumüller Scholarship
We are thrilled to announce that two of our exceptional SEAS PhD students have been awarded the prestigious Heinz Neumüller Scholarship from the Heinz Neumüller Foundation. This year, the foundation is supporting three outstanding doctoral students from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, and we are proud to have two of our own recipients among them.
The scholarship award ceremony took place on August 22, 2023, at CEWE Stiftung & Co. KGaA in Oldenburg, where Jan Müller, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Heinz Neumüller Foundation, along with other esteemed members of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors, presented the scholarship certificates. We are delighted to congratulate Maren Bertheau and Hatice Şahin Ippoliti on this remarkable achievement.
These talented young scientists have demonstrated not only their exceptional abilities but also their initiative and responsibility in their respective fields of study. In recognition of their outstanding achievements, they will each receive financial support of 500 euros per month throughout the year 2023.
The Heinz Neumüller Foundation has been providing support to doctoral students since 1996, and this year's scholarships mark a significant milestone. In total, 134 doctoral students have benefited from the foundation's funding, amounting to a substantial 608,600 euros invested in nurturing the talents of the future. The Heinz Neumüller Foundation sees this support as an "investment" in the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and scientists.
We are incredibly proud of Maren Bertheau, Hatice Şahin Ippoliti, and all our talented students who contribute to the SEAS community. This recognition not only reflects their hard work but also the excellence and dedication that define our school. We look forward to witnessing their continued success in their academic journeys.
- DIVI - Patient Safety Research Award
The collaborative research project led by Dr. Ulf Günther and his interdisciplinary team at the University of Oldenburg, with significant contributions from scientific staff member Jan Hendrik Röhl, has earned prestigious recognition for their pioneering work in the field of patient safety. Their innovative approach to early delirium detection, using an android robot-patient, has been awarded the Patient Safety Research Prize, a significant achievement valued at 10,000 euros. This substantial prize acknowledges the team's outstanding contribution to healthcare, particularly in addressing the vital issue of delirium diagnosis in intensive care settings. Their invention not only simplifies the training of medical professionals but also showcases the power of innovation and collaboration in enhancing patient safety and well-being. The team's dedication to improving patient safety and their commitment to advancing the understanding and management of delirium has rightfully earned them the recognition from the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) and Philips. Their pursuit of a more efficient, reliable, and user-friendly diagnostic tool for delirium signifies a significant step forward in the medical field, emphasizing the pivotal role of technology and innovation in healthcare. The substantial financial prize they have been awarded will further support their research, helping to refine and expand the capabilities of the robot-patient, ultimately benefitting patients and medical professionals alike.
It is important to acknowledge the team of Dr. med. Ulf Günther: Jan Hendrik Röhl, Dr. Sandra Hellmers, Nicole Feldmann, Dr. Rebecca Diekmann, and Prof. Andreas Hein.

- PriMe Academy AG
In a significant achievement for the University of Oldenburg, an interdisciplinary team consisting of Anna Brinkmann (specializing in Assistive Systems and Medical Technology), Julian Festerling (with expertise in Political Economics and German Studies), and Jan Hendrik Röhl (also specializing in Assistive Systems and Medical Technology) emerged victorious in the international Management and Entrepreneurship competition, the priME-Cup. This prestigious competition, hosted by the priME Academy AG, saw participation from multiple German universities and international institutions, including the Mingachevir State University (Azerbaijan) and the University Ovidius Constanța (Romania). The challenge at the heart of this competition involved managing a simulated company focused on producing and marketing personalized 3D-printed sunglasses. The team from the University of Oldenburg excelled in making critical entrepreneurial decisions encompassing pricing strategies, workforce planning, and investment in promising future areas, leading to their victory and a voucher for an executive coaching session.
Their success is attributed to an interdisciplinary composition and hands-on experience with innovative methodologies, including simulation games and prototyping facilitated by the Innovation(s)Campus. By addressing complex decision-making scenarios, these experiences fostered a deeper understanding of intricate relationships while promoting enjoyment and teamwork. The team's remarkable victory and participation in the priME-Cup attest to the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in nurturing entrepreneurial skills among university students, thereby enriching their academic journeys.
