Research interests

My research focuses on species interactions, how these relationships shape ecological communities and are often affected by environmental conditions or anthropogenic impacts. I have specialized in marine benthic communities in both tropical and temperate systems. My studies place special emphasis on:

  • Feeding defenses in times of global change: How environmental variability affect the production of chemical metabolites in marine organisms.
  • The impact of invasive species: Negative and positive effects of invasive species on the chemical, physiological and ecological performance of native species.
  • Allelopathy in marine macroalgae and invertebrates: Allelopathic and other chemical ecological interactions enable species to compete for resources and to maintain and disperse their populations. Special focus is on the analysis of chemical interactions that introduced species use to successfully invade new habitats.
  • Benthic monitoring methods on temperate and tropical reefs
