FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to worry about internships?

In general, you don't have to worry about getting an internship in the numerous internships.

But be careful:

  • Register in good time. You will find all the necessary information in the internships and in the corresponding modules on Stud.IP. It is usually not possible to take part after the registration deadline.
  • Take part in the safety briefing. There is a safety briefing for every chemistry internship. If you do not attend the safety briefing, you cannot take part in the work placement.
  • You must fulfil certain requirements for some internships. For example, you must have passed the OC basic lecture for the organic chemistry practical course. For other internships, such as the thermodynamics internship, students who have not passed written exams in the first semester may be eliminated if the number of participants is too high. If you have passed all written exams, you do not need to worry.
  • The module coordinators will be happy to answer any further questions you may have.

Is attendance compulsory on the Chemistry degree programme?

Attendance is not compulsory in any lectures or tutorials. However, we always advise you to attend as many lectures as possible. If course content is uploaded, it usually cannot keep up with the attendance of the lecture and you would also miss out on any experiments.

Tutorials are essential to consolidate the knowledge you have gained and to clarify any ambiguities.

Attendance is not compulsory for internships, but if you are not there, you are out of luck and cannot carry out the required experiments or write the necessary protocols.

What should an email to the professor look like?

Professors generally have little time, so it is advisable to get to the point quickly but politely. You should also avoid spelling mistakes, even if the professor's reply contains some. Sie and Sie are capitalised.

Example email:

Dear Mr Müller,

I would like to take my integrated synthesis practical exam with you.
What is your organisation like? I always have time except Mondays.

Yours sincerely,

Cyclo Hexan

What do I do if I receive an email from a professor with "Hello" as a salutation or with no salutation at all?

In general, you should adapt to the professor's reply style, but you should still formulate complete sentences.

Where can I find old exams?

You can find old exams relating to the chemistry degree programme via Stud.IP in our student council event under "Files -> Help -> Scripts/written notes/exams and other help". Please note that old exams are not available for every module. These are often memory protocols prepared by the students.

How do I appeal against unfair marking?
