2024

21-24.11.2024: Prof. Fatikow visited Purdue University, School of Mechanical Engineering, West Lafayette, IN, USA, to discuss the organization of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at the Small Scale (MARSS) that will be hosted on July 2025 by Purdue University, with Prof. David J. Cappelleri as MARSS2025 General Chair.  

24-25.10.2024: Prof. Fatikow visited Zhejiang University, MicroSatellite Research Center, Hangzhou, China, and presented AMiR research activities. The visit provided a fruitful exchange of ideas for joint research work as well as for further development of MARSS activities in China. 

01-12.09.2024: Dr. Yuning Lei, Dr. James Mead, and Dr. Liang Ma visited the J.B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville, KY, USA. They offered a seminar talk on their respective research activities at AMiR, and also conducted an in-depth tour of the experimental equipment, and facilities at the LARRI lab, led by Prof. Dan Popa. The visit included constructive discussions on collaborative research directions and specific exchanges within the framework of the DAAD LicLoM project.

31.07-28.08.2024: Dr. Alexander Tselev from the University of Aveiro in Portugal worked at AMiR on sample preparation and scanning of liquids using a scanning microwave microscope inside a scanning electron microscope, in the frame work of the EU-funded ENSIGN MSCA project. During this period, he offered a seminar titled “Near Field Scanning Probe Microscopy at the University of Aveiro” for the AMiR group.

20-24.08.2024 Prof. Fatikow is a Plenary Speaker in the Main Forum of the World Robot Conference (WRC) and a Program Co-Chair at the Int. Symposium on Advanced Robotics and Automation (SARA) held in Beijing, China.  

15-26.07.2024: Prof. Erdem Alaca, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Koç University, Istanbul, has visited AMiR. During his visit, he was made acquainted with the experimental platforms and ongoing research projects within the division, and future potential collaboration opportunities were discussed.

15-26.07.2024: School student, and aspiring Engineer, Fahir Ata Alaca, carried out a research internship within the AMiR Department for a duration of 2 weeks. Ata was involved in a variety of experimental and design tasks, including the tele-operation of an optical microscope-based nanomanipulation platform for the pick-and-place transfer of nanowires as well as the 3D computer aided design (CAD) and virtual assembly of all the components that make up the experimental platform.

01-05.07.2024: Several members of the AMiR team have attended the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at the Small Scale (MARSS2024), hosted at TU Delft, in Delft, Netherlands.

Dr. Muhammad Yasir and Dr. James Mead each organized a special session and presented their work. Ms. Warda Saeed, Mr. Shakir Ullah, Dr. Liang Ma, and Dr. Yuning Lei also took this opportunity to present their work, interacted closely with the audience and peers present at the session, respectively. During the conference, the team also met with Prof. Quan Zhou's team from Aalto University, Finland, engaged in detailed discussions and exchanges regarding the collaborative work of their DAAD project.

Prof. Fatikow is the Founding Chair of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS). The 7th edition was held from 01-05 July 2024 at TU Delft, Netherlands. The conference attracted the record number of more than 300 professionals from 29 countries. MARSS2024 featured 13 plenary presentations of cutting-edge technologies and 46 focused technical sessions (oral presentations only).  

01. – 02.06.2024: AMiR participated in the Discovery Days in Mathematics, Computing Science, and Natural Sciences. This event for school classes and general public was part of the celebration activities of the 50 year anniversary of Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (https://uol.de/en/school5/discoverydays).

25.04.2024: AMiR participated in the Zukunftstag/Girls Day activities of the University of Oldenburg by contributing to a lecture and offering introductions to electron and atomic force microscopy for high school students.

05.04.2024: Dr. Yasir travelled to Belgrade, Serbia for the midterm review meeting of the GrInshield project funded by the EU. AMiR´s activities related to the GrInshield project were presented and approved by the project officer and an external examiner.

02.04.2024: Prof. Fatikow offered a seminar talk on AMiR research activities at Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, UAE.

In the period, 19 to 21st March 2024, AMiR hosted a delegation from the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade as a part of the EU-funded project GrInshield. The delegates were trained in nanohandling technologies for studying the morphology and electrical properties of graphene-based composites produced in VINCA. 

07.02.2024: Prof. Fatikow offered a seminar talk on AMiR research activities at J.B. Speed School of Engineering, University of Louisville, KY, USA.

On January 31st, 2024, Dr Muhammad Yasir delivered a lecture at the University of Belgrade Serbia. The lecture was based on cutting-edge research performed at AMiR. It was held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Vinca institute of Nuclear sciences. 

Dr. Saikat Kumar Shome and Dr. Amit Kumar from the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute in Durgapur, India, have visited AMiR for joint experiments and discussions as part of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) project ‘Jump to Contact Suppression during Force Spectroscopy Measurements inside SEM’.

2023

11.12.-31.12.2023 Dr. Manojit Pusty visited CSIR - Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute at Durgapur, India, where he met with the scientist, discussed the DAAD-India Project, presented the work done and discussed the work that will be done on the basis of the project.

Shakir Ullah started research work at AMiR in December 2023 as Research Associate.

09.12.2023: Prof. Fatikow offered a seminar talk on AMiR research activities at School of Mechanical Engineering, Tianjin University, China.

06.12.2023: Prof. Fatikow is a Keynote Speaker at the World Intelligent Manufacturing Conference and Industrial Robots Development Forum held in Nanjing, China.

29.11.2023 - 11.12.2023: Dr. Liang Ma and Dr. Yuning Lei visited the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tianjin University, China, respectively, where they provided presentations showcasing their research conducted at AMiR. Informative and constructive discussions were conducted with colleagues from Tianjin University. The visit deepened mutual insights into each other's research and facilitated further collaboration on future research work.

27.11.2023: Dr. Muhammad Yasir´s article on Glucose sensing based on radiofrequency and surface modification was accepted for publication in the journal Micromachines. The article is a result of the ongoing collaboration of Dr. Yasir with the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications(DET) of the Polytechnic of Turin, Italy. https://doi.org/10.3390/mi14122163

20.11.2023: Dr. Muhammad Yasir´s application for the co-supervision of a PhD. student at the Department of Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications(DET) Polytechnic of Turin is approved. Dr- Muhammad Yasir will co-supervise Mr Fabio Peinetti along with Prof. Patrizia Savi. The activities performed during the PhD will be related to the long-standing collaboration with the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications of the Polytechnic of Turin. 

18.10.2023: The impact of graphene in electromagnetic shielding is studied in the EU-funded project GrInshield. A review of graphene and its composites applied to electromagnetic shielding was published by Dr. Muhammad Yasir along with other project partners. https://doi.org/10.1007/s41127-023-00065-3

Prof. Fatikow is the Founding Chair of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS). The 6th edition was held from 09-13 October 2023 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

10-12.10.2023: Dr. Mead and Dr. Yasir have attended the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at the Small Scale (MARSS2023), hosted at NYU Abu Dhabi, in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Dr. Yasir and Dr. Mead each had the opportunity to present their work.

October 2023: AMiR has been successfully awarded a grant through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) that will facilitate future research collaboration with the Next Generation Systems Research Group led by Prof. Dan Popa, at the University of Louisville, NY, USA. The collaboration topic is ‘Liquid metal-based characterization of the dry environment surface for Locomotive Microrobots’. The AMiR team appreciates Dr. Yuning Lei for his contribution to the proposal.

01.10.2023. Dr. Dipak Bhowmik has started work at AMiR as a Research Associate.

28.09.2023: Graphene is an important contender for use in tunable microwave components due to its scalability and variable fermi energy level. This is highlighted in a recent article published by Dr. Muhammad Yasir in the Micromachines journal. It is shown that the phase shifting capabilities of graphene-based phase shifters can be improved by adequate optimization of the different sections of the phase shifter. https://doi.org/10.3390/mi14101877

06.09.2023: Prof. Fatikow offered a seminar talk on AMiR research activities at Department of Electronics, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

25.-27.09.2023: Dr. Yunning Lei, Dr. James Mead, and Dr. Liang Ma. have visited the Robotic Instruments Group led by Prof. Quan Zhou, at Aalto University, near Helsinki, Finland. The visit is part our award German Academic Exchange Service project on the research topic ‘Adhesion Measurement: Comparison between a water droplet and a liquid metal droplet technique’. The visit facilitated in-depth discussion about future collaborative research work.

23.-25.08.2023 Warda Saeed visited Belgrade, Serbia for "The first Onsite Training in VINCA" as a part of the GrinShield Project.

17.-20.08.2023  Prof. Fatikow is a Keynote Speaker at the World Robot Conference (WRC) and at the Int. Symposium on Advanced Robotics and Automation (SARA) held in Beijing, China.

16.08.2023 Dr. Manojit Pusty started research work at AMiR as Research Associate.  

July 2023. Dr. Liang Ma has been successfully awarded a joint German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) / China Scholarship Council (CSC) Postdoctoral scholarship. This scholarship will support him to further develop a nanowire adhesion characterisation techniques, helping to elucidate the role of environmental conditions on nanowire adhesion.

Prof. Wen Jung Li, City University of Hongkong, S.A.R. China, will be serving as a visiting professor at AMiR in the scope of DAAD-RGC program. Prof. Li’s lab at CityU and AMiR have been collaborating on microrobotics for many years.

30.-31.05.2023: Prof. Fatikow visited School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China.

10.-12.05.2023: Prof. Fatikow visited Koç University, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Istanbul, Turkey. The visit provided a fruitful exchange of ideas for joint research work as well as for further development of MARSS activities in Turkey. MARSS is the annual flagship event for the microrobotics community.

27.02.-07.03.2023: Prof. Fatikow visited several labs at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), S.A.R., China. The visits provided a fruitful exchange of ideas for joint research work as well as for further development of MARSS activities in Asia. MARSS is the annual flagship event for microrobotics community.

2022

Liang Ma started work at AMiR in December 2022 as Research Associate.

13.09.2022: AMiR successfully applied for a DFG grant to work on “Nanowire-based Miniaturized Mechanical Transducers Designed for Surface Force Sensing”. AMiR team highly appreciates the contribution by Dr. James Mead and Dr. Sören Zimmermann, who played a leading role in proposal preparation.

Olaf C. Hänßler has accepted an appointment as Professor at the IU International University of Applied Sciences with effect from 01.09.2022. The AMiR-team congratulates Dr Hänßler on this appointment and wishes him much strength and success in establishing his new professorship!

Prof. Fatikow is the Founding Chair of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS). The 5th edition was held from 25-29 July 2022 in Toronto, Canada, after a 3-years break due to the pandemic. This year MARSS attracted over 200 presentations and even slightly exceeded the numbers at MARSS2019 in Helsinki.

Dr. Olaf C. Haenssler served as Session Chair at 2022 “IEEE MTT-S Int. Conference on Electromagnetic and Multiphysics Modeling and Optimization (NEMO2022)”, July 6-8, 2022, Limoges, France.

24.05.2022: AMiR successfully applied for an EU grant GrInShield. The project deals with graphene-based composites in electromagnetic interference shielding. The triennial project is funded with 1.2 million Euros. AMiR contributes with our expertise in microwave microscopy. The proposal was initiated and implemented by Dr. Olaf Haenssler, AMiR team highly appreciates this contribution.

30.04.2022: Dr. Albert Sill, who made significant contribution to building up our Division right from the very beginning in 2001, took his official leave from AMiR and entered well-earned retirement from May 2022.

19.04.2022: AMiR successfully applied for a DFG grant to work on “Atomic Force Microscopy in Nanoplastics Research”. AMiR team highly appreciates the contribution by Dr. Sören Zimmermann and Dr. Fabian von Kleist-Retzow, who played a leading role in proposal preparation.

17.02.2022: Dr. Muhammad Yasir received a DFG grant to conduct the research work on “Graphene Quadrature amplitude backscatter modulator on paper”. Congratulations from AMiR team!

2021

Prof. Fatikow is a Keynote Speaker at the International Symposium on Micro- and Nano-Manipulation held in Guangzhou, China, on 16-18 December 2021.

08.07.-02.08.2019: Dr Haenssler visited Quantitative Nanostructure Characterization Group at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Boulder, CO, USA for joint experiments in the framework of a joint project.

Prof. Fatikow is the Founding Chair of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS). The 4th conference was held from 1-5 July 2019 in Helsinki, Finland. This annual conference is the flagship event in the field of microrobotics, it is technically supported by IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and IEEE Nanotechnology Council.

17.06.2019-04.07.2019: Dr. James Mead from The University of Queensland completed a research stay of several weeks at AMiR as part of the DAAD/Universities Australia project "Understanding the nanoscale mechanics of individual hierarchical structures".

04.06.-06.06.19  Dr. S. Jovanović Vučetić and Dr.  J. Prekodravac, Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia, visited AMiR for joint experiments in the framework of a joint DAAD exchange project. Prof. Svetlana Jovanović Vučetić gave a seminar talk on "Synthesis, modification and possible application of carbon based and other nanomaterials produced in INN Vinca".

04.06.2019: Prof. Bijan Shirinzadeh, Monash University, Clayton, Australia, visited AMiR and gave a seminar talk on "Research in Micro/nano manipulation mechanisms at Robotics and Mechatronics Research laboratory (RMRL)".

 

09.-27.05.2019: Prof. Fatikow visited South China University of Technology (SCUT), Guangzhou, China. He offered seminar talks on AMiR research activities.

The paper "Investigating the Effects of Electron Beam Irradiation on Nanoscale Adhesion” submitted by Dr. Sören Zimmermann and Prof. Han Huang won the Best Conference Paper Award at the IEEE-NEMS 2019, Bangkok, Thailand, 11-14 April 2019.

The poster “Liquid Metal-Based Manipulator for Microscale Handling Inside SEM” presented by Fabian von Kleist-Retzow, Dr. Malte Bartenwerfer and Prof. Sergej Fatikow won the Best Conference Poster Award at the IEEE-NEMS 2019, Bangkok, Thailand, 11-14 April 2019.

01.02.2019: Dr. Sören Zimmermann returned to AMiR after completing a one-year postdoctoral research stay at The University of Queensland, School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering, Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Zimmermann will continue his research work on assembly and characterization of complex nanoscale systems.

22.-29.01.2019: Prof. Fatikow visited the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Boulder, CO, USA.

2018

05-06.12.2018: Dr. Olaf C. Haenssler attended the BALTICS conference in Jurmala and Ventspils, Latvia.

10.07.2018: Dr. Haenssler is elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior member.

Prof. Fatikow is the Founding Chair of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS). The 3rd conference is held from 04-08 July 2018 in Nagoya, Japan. This annual conference is technically supported by IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and IEEE Nanotechnology Council. MARSS team at AMiR endeavours to develop MARSS to the flagship event in the field.

13.-15.08.2017: Prof. Fatikow is appointed as a member of the 6-person expert committee to perform the first international evaluation of Mechanical Engineering Department of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. The ME department is ranked number 1 in China by the Ministry of Education and employs more than 120 faculty, including three academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Aside from Fatikow, the committee also includes experts from the USA, Canada, Hongkong and Switzerland.

17-21.07.17: Prof. Fatikow is the Founding Chair of the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS).The 2nd conference is held from 17-21 July 2017 in Montreal, Canada. This recently established annual conference is technically supported by IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and IEEE Nanotechnology Council. MARSS team at AMiR endeavours to develop MARSS to the flagship event in the field.
