Jill has always had two passions in life: teaching and computers. Her undergraduate degrees specialised in Mathematics teaching, when this was a newly created formal field of study at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She started her career as a Mathematics teacher and lecturer, and then spent some time working as a computer programmer, both in higher education and the corporate world.

Jill completed the M.Ed. (Computer-Assisted Education) at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. This programme has a strong 'family' and community ethos, and graduates remain part of an ongoing worldwide network. She went on to complete the PhD (Computer-Integrated Education) (2005) with a thesis is entitled “Quality assurance practice in online (web-supported) learning in higher education: An exploratory study”.

From 2000 to 2009 Jill was a Project Manager (E-education) and instructional designer in the Department for Education Innovation at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. She is now a Senior Learning Technologist at Oxford University, England. Jill is responsible for user consultation, support and training in the use of the institutional learning management system (LMS), as well as plagiarism awareness software. As a project manager, academic IT lead and learning technologist, she has been involved in the Lecture Capture pilot project, the Turnitin review project, the LMS review and implementation project, and the E-exams project. Jill’s research interests include quality assurance of e-learning, faculty support and development, and the adoption of (new) learning technologies. Jill remains captivated by the use of technology to enrich the teaching and learning experience for academics and students alike.

Jill has presented at numerous international conferences and workshops – in South Africa, the UK, Europe and the USA. She is on the international board of advisers and a consultant editor of the open access journal Distance Education and Teachers’ Training in Africa (DETA). As a freelance activity, Jill carries out English language editing of journal articles for writers whose first language is not English.
