Ecological footprint
This module familiarises pupils with the concept of the ecological footprint. The ecological footprint serves to visualise a person's consumption of resources and, alongside the ecological rucksack, is a measure that can be used to visualise the enormous differences in the use of resources. It expresses the land consumption required to ensure a certain standard of living for a person under current production conditions. While people in the global North generate an ecological footprint that is well above what they are globally entitled to, many people in the global South generate a very small footprint that is far below what is within the planet's regenerative capacity. While people worldwide cause an average global footprint of 2.7 gha and in Germany 4.6 gha, the Earth's biocapacity is only 1.8 gha. This module is designed to give pupils the opportunity to calculate their ecological footprint and learn about ways to reduce it. The ecological footprint is a complex method of measuring a sustainable way of life, but it is easy to understand due to its pictorial nature.
