Sustainability strategies
The term sustainability is on everyone's lips. However, it is rarely made clear what the term actually means. There is also rarely a differentiated discussion, based on valid definitions, about the opportunities and limitations of the various strategies for planning for the future with a commitment to sustainability. This module introduces strategies for sustainable production and consumption, relevant social dimensions and criteria for evaluating sustainable and non-sustainable activities. In order to illustrate the overall context of resource extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal, a film on this topic is shown and discussed in three sections in the first double lesson. In the second double lesson, four sustainability strategies are discussed: Efficiency, consistency, sufficiency and subsistence. The teacher introduces the topic with the help of a PowerPoint presentation and the students work out the four strategies in groups and discuss them. In the third double lesson, these strategies are placed in relation to social dimensions (ecology, economy, technology, politics and culture) and evaluated using criteria (sustainability, preservation, solidarity, justice, responsibility). The students summarise the strategies, dimensions and criteria and discuss the scope of the strategies based on given situations.
