Call for Papers - Corporate Environmental Management Information Systems (BUIS-Tage 2023) within the EnviroInfo 2023 conference

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to announce a call for submissions for the Special Track for the 13th Corporate Environmental Management Information Systems (CEMIS) Days (BUIS-Tage 2023) at EnviroInfo 2023

The 13th Corporate Environmental Management Information Systems (CEMIS) Days of 2023 focus on efforts for environmental protection, sustainability and energy efficiency supported using environmental management systems, which require a multitude of heterogeneous data to do justice to the planning, management, and control of environment-related tasks. These data must be stored and processed in a target-oriented manner by CEMIS. The performance of the currently implemented CEMIS does not yet meet the requirements of the sustainability debate. In this context, IT plays a decisive role in sustainable corporate development. CEMIS must be utilized in product development as an essential component of environmentally integrated production and strategic decision-making, rather than solely as an end-of-pipe solution for documenting environmental indicators and ensuring legal compliance. Therefore, recognizing cause-effect relationships promptly is of paramount importance to proactively counteract the environmental impact of company operations, both within and beyond its boundaries. Failure to do so would result in missed opportunities to leverage the precautionary aspect of environmental protection.

The CEMIS Days serve as a platform to disseminate information on the status of CEMIS, present novel ideas and approaches and engage in a lively discussion with a panel of experts from academia and industry. These discussions aim to cultivate a convivial culture that fosters in-depth analysis and exploration of the topics at hand. While the symposium welcomes progress reports that detail both partial results and ongoing challenges, it also seeks to encourage the exchange between academic research and practical applications. Therefore, beyond the typical components of a conventional symposium, this event emphasizes the significance of fostering collaborative partnerships between academia and industry.

The special track will focus on the following topics:

1. Green IT & software:
The central focus of this topic is the sustainable and efficient utilization of (corporate) ICT infrastructures, through the implementation of (semantic) modelling, software and hardware optimization, and resource conservation. Additionally, this topic explores the integration of sustainable information management, specifically Green Business Intelligence and Green IS, and their application in the form of (business) environmental information systems, for the benefit of companies and other decision-makers.

2. Material flow management:
This topic area focuses on material flow management, which includes the visualization and analysis of material and life cycle assessments. Additionally, it covers the development of indicator systems for life cycle assessment, eco-control and simulation methods that deal with incomplete or inaccurate data.

3. Green production & logistics:
The focus is on business process management (Green Business Process Management) and its automation, the creation of transparency for internal management, quality management in the processes and the necessary indicators for decision support. In addition, the focus is on sustainable mobility, the development of key figure systems for control and optimization, the management of hazards, e.g., in the transport sector, and the management of sustainable supply chains.

4. IT-supported sustainability management and communication:
The event will cover several topics related to sustainability, including sustainability in corporate management, external communication such as sustainability reporting and dialogue, the development of indicators for sustainable tourism, as well as case studies and best practices.

5. Material efficiency & recycling:
The event places significant emphasis on key issues concerning the enhancement of material efficiency and resource conservation. Specifically, the focus lies on strategic resources and the reuse of materials to promote sustainable resource utilization.

6. Sustainable energy supply:
Focuses on issues related to designing an affordable, reliable and sustainable energy future with low greenhouse gas emissions and using energy sources and technologies for application in a business context.

7. AI, CEMIS & open data in the context of CEMIS:
Opportunities for the application of Data Science and AI in the context of operational environmental informatics will be discussed. Special attention could be given to the extraction of environmentally relevant information from unstructured data sources. Public data as the basis for sustainability, open data as a tool for participation (citizen participation), automated specialized processes for environmental monitoring and reporting, and big data analysis.

8. Case studies/teaching concepts for teaching sustainability in teaching:
This track provides an opportunity to showcase and discuss case studies and teaching concepts related to the integration of sustainability into the curriculum, with a particular focus on corporate environmental information systems. Presentations and discussions can cover various formats, including digital formats, that effectively teach necessary technologies and methods to students in a practical way.
