Introduction

Virtual water is becoming increasingly important in view of the growing scarcity of water in many regions of the world. This double lesson provides an overview of problems relating to the global water supply, water pollution and the economical use of water in regions with water surpluses. In addition, the terms green, blue, grey and virtual water are introduced. To this end, the pupils work in groups to gather information on important aspects and problems of global water supply and discuss specific issues. Relevant topics and problems are summarised on five worksheets. The information is then summarised and the consequences of the research results are discussed. The focus should be on questions that address the handling of water in Germany. At the end of the double lesson, the results of the quiz are presented by the pupils and compared with the actual values of virtual water consumption. This can be followed by a discussion on our consumer behaviour.
