In November, we spent a weekend on Spiekeroog in the sunniest weather. We took the island taxi from Neuharlingersiel to the island. During a walk to our accommodation, we had our first input at the church in the village about the history and some general information about the island (for example about the historic "floating roofs", which were supposed to save you during storm surges - does that really work?) The next day, we took photos of the hydrology, vegetation and soil on a transect across the island. We started at the mean high tide line, continued through the pioneer dunes, white and brown dunes and ended up at the salt marsh. It was super exciting to see how easy it is to understand the initial soil development here and how many different habitats can be found on such a small island. After evening walks under the full moon and games of "Who am I?", we used the last morning to explore the eastern plateau. It only formed relatively recently and is still undergoing major changes. The time was far too short, as we were already heading back in the afternoon. However, some were lucky enough to see harbour porpoises on the way back - what a lovely farewell!
