DS1: Where do the resources come from?
Introduction
After watching a short film about the materials contained in mobile phones, the students focus on the raw materials and their origin, which are required for the production of mobile phones. In groups or individually, they research mining areas and working conditions during extraction as well as the social and ecological consequences. The students summarise the key findings on a PowerPoint slide. The slides are then compiled and presented. The slides created in this way are explained and commented on. Finally, a film about the conditions of coltan mining in the Congo is shown as an example and discussed in plenary.
Preparations
Laptops and a projector are required for the film contributions and for the research. The number of laptops depends on the division of the class into small groups.
