This lesson introduces the concept of the ecological rucksack. Friedrich Schmidt-Bleek has written a short text to illustrate the material consumption of everyday consumer items, which first provides an impulse (AB 1: Mirja's weighty morning.) AB 2: "Ecological rucksack - are we going hiking?" then introduces the concept. AB 3: "How is an ecological rucksack calculated?" explains which factors influence the size of the ecological rucksack. The concept is put into concrete terms using the ecological rucksack of a mobile phone (AB 4). After this introduction, the pupils have the opportunity to research for themselves how big the ecological rucksacks of everyday objects are. AB 5 offers the opportunity to add to the table. Finally, or as a homework assignment, the pupils write their own little story about the weights of their material environment based on AB 1 (AB 6: "My weighty day").

Worksheets 1 - 6 should be copied for the students in the appropriate number. A laptop and internet access are required for the research.
