DS2: Strategies for sustainability
Introduction
This double lesson provides an introduction to sustainability strategies. The teacher introduces the topic with a PowerPoint presentation. The students then work on four strategies for sustainable production and consumption. The strategy of efficiency focusses on the rational use of scarce resources. The strategy of consistency pursues the goal of constantly re-utilising the resources used. Ideally, resources remain in the cycle of production, consumption and disposal without loss ("cradle to cradle"). The concept of sufficiency focuses on the finite nature of resources and the planet's capacity to absorb them and advocates the lowest possible consumption of raw materials. Sufficiency strategies are closely linked to sustainable consumption, self-limitation, deceleration and decommercialisation. The subsistence strategy aims to focus on regional production and consumption, community use and extending useful life. Worksheets are available for each strategy. The pupils create posters for the strategies and discuss which areas of society are involved in each strategy. Is it more the task of politics or the economy to act sustainably? What role do consumers play? Can an individual person/group exert influence? After the development phase, the strategies are presented and discussed in plenary.
Preparations
A projector and laptop must be available for the PowerPoint presentation. A sufficient number of worksheets 1 - 4 for double lesson 2 must be printed out.
