Important programmes and websites
Microsoft Office
For your studies you will need a decent programme for word processing and presentations. You can of course choose the completely free version, but with your university email address you can get Microsoft Office for free.
Chemdraw Professional
When it comes to drawing molecules, reaction equations and reaction mechanisms, ChemDraw is a must. Although many functions are quite intuitive, there are many tips and tricks to get good looking drawings. A video with the ChemDraw basics and the ChemDraw Wizard is a good start.
Here you will find instructions on how to install ChemDraw on your computer.
VPN / Global Protect
If you need access to the campus network from home, for example to open certain folders or visit websites that can only be used via the campus network (Reaxys, Scifinder, search engines for papers), you need a VPN. A connection to the campus network is also required to use ORIGIN.
The university provides VPN access for all students.

ORIGIN
The ORIGIN software is used to analyse and graphically display measurement data. The ORIGIN 2019 version for Windows operating systems is available as a faculty licence at School V of the University of Oldenburg.
Installation instructions and the installation file can be obtained from IT services.
Mestrenova
In the basic practical course in organic chemistry and in the integrated synthesis practical course, you will have to analyse NMR spectra to write your protocols. This works best with Mestrenova, for which a campus licence is available.

Reaxys & Scifinder
In the basic practical course in organic chemistry and the integrated synthesis practical course, you will be faced with the task of finding synthesis routes for various molecules and then producing them. So that you are not left to your own devices, there are two search engines in which the desired molecule can be drawn and then searched for, similar to ChemDraw.
You need access to the campus network for both websites. So if you want to work from home, you can only do so via the aforementioned VPN.
Reaxys can be used without further admission to the campus network.
With Scifinder you have to register first, you can find instructions here.

Database information system
The database information system of the University of Oldenburg shows you all the databases available to you at a glance and also informs you whether you can access the pages directly or whether you need a connection to the campus network.
Below are a few pages worth mentioning.
Gestis substance database
In the Gestis substance database you will find everything you need to know about the physical data, handling and disposal of most common chemicals. If you are looking for H & P phrases in a clearly organised form for a specific chemical, this page is always a good place to start.
Spectral Database for Organic Compounds
Are you currently taking part in the basic organic chemistry practical course and are not sure whether the signals in your NMR measurement are your desired product or just dirt? Then you can find spectra for many organic substances on this page and make your analysis a little easier.
On this page you can simulate spectra for various compounds. But be careful, the simulated spectra should only be used as a rough guide and should never be taken as fact.
Laboratory stock catalogue
If something has broken in the lab or you just need to get something, you can look up the name and article number you need to fill out your order form here. However, this only works in the campus network.
Reference management / Citavi
Reference management software is used to collect literature for the preparation of a scientific publication and provides an overview of your own literature holdings as well as the management of individual projects.
As you will be writing many protocols and, of course, your Bachelor's thesis, you will need reference management software to keep an overview and to cite your sources properly.
The style of applied chemistry is usually used for the bibliography, here are two examples:
