The BEML has calculated that around 11 million tonnes of food were thrown away in Germany in 2020. The largest proportion - almost 2/3 - is generated in private households. Out-of-home catering and processing together account for almost a third of food waste. Only 7% of the total amount is generated in the retail sector.

Primary production produces the least amount of waste.

When we look at this, we realise that waste is generated along the entire food supply chain. It is clear that everyone involved must take their responsibility to reduce avoidable waste so that valuable resources do not end up unused and unnecessarily in the rubbish bin!
