DS3: Bonding as a repair option
Introduction
Repairs are used to repair defective objects and workpieces. Bonding offers a cost-effective, quick and easy alternative to other joining techniques such as welding, screwing, soldering or vulcanising.
Nevertheless, the use of adhesives can lead to a problem with other repair techniques due to the inseparable connection between two materials. As a result, adhesive bonds can make it impossible to repair individual parts if these individual parts are glued into the housing of the product or to other parts.
Preparations
This section describes the possibilities for repairs and how these can be carried out using adhesive bonding. Reference is also made to the extent to which the bonding of individual parts can influence or prevent repairs.
Products that can be repaired and repaired by technical bonding processes include
- Porcelain and ceramic objects
- Model aeroplane
- Armrest of a chair
- Footrest of a sofa
- Inflatable boat, stand up paddler (PVC)
- Tents
- Bicycle tube
- Shoes
- Wallpaper
- Disc brake pads
You can find a repair path regarding the repair of rubber using a defective bicycle inner tube on this website at: retibne.de/materialien/fahrradtechnik/ds5
Note:
Even though glued joints are a simple repair option, the advantages and disadvantages of adhesives should be analysed again. The question of the extent to which adhesive bonds make the repair of workpieces more difficult or impossible should therefore form an important part of the lesson in advance.
