Greenhouse gas emissions in Germany have been significantly reduced overall since 1990. In 1990, the energy industry was by far the sector with the highest GHG emissions. Emissions from energy production have fallen by around a quarter compared to 2021, but are still the largest source of emissions. Industry and transport are not far behind.

Overall, emissions must be further reduced in all areas - including buildings, agriculture, waste management and others - if climate targets such as those agreed in the Paris Agreement are to be met.
