DS6: The ecological rucksack
Introduction
Every product has an ecological rucksack. This term, which was coined by Friedrich Schmidt-Bleek in 1994, is intended to symbolise the fact that the production, use and disposal of every artefact and every service consumes a certain amount of resources. The ecological rucksack, which is expressed in grams, kilograms or tonnes, can be used to carry out a life cycle assessment - similar to the ecological footprint - and thus estimate the ecological consequences of resource extraction. This does not include land and water consumption. This double lesson introduces the term and takes a closer look at the ecological rucksack of a smartphone.
