DS5: Electronic waste
Introduction
This double lesson focuses on the problem of the increasing amount of electronic waste and the unresolved issue of recycling. After a discussion following the film, a charging cable or a pair of headphones is used to calculate the quantities of metals and rare earths used. The pupils are asked to extrapolate this to get a feel for the relevance of even small quantities. Finally, another film offers an alternative solution to the disposal situation. This is a documentary about the first and so far only company in Germany that buys up mobile phones and recycles the copper they contain (urban mining).
