DS3: Resources
Introduction
After the students have dealt with the components of mobile phones and the raw materials required for them in the previous lessons, the focus of this double lesson is on the social and ecological consequences of resource extraction.
Specifically, the working conditions as well as the social and political implications will be analysed. Using the examples of tungsten mining and the extraction of gold - both raw materials that are indispensable for the production of mobile phones - the situation of the people who are exploited at the beginning of the production chain is highlighted in short film clips. Using the fact sheets created in the previous lesson, the pupils summarise the various problems associated with the extraction of resources for the metals and rare earths required for production.
Preparations
The teacher must provide the following for this lesson:
* A sufficient number of tools
* Assembly instructions (printed or digital)
* Defective charging cables
* Defective headphones (broken cable)
Students can also bring their own defective cables.
Recommendation: It is essential to ensure that the cables to be repaired are only used in the low-voltage range (this is usually the case with mobile phone accessories).
