Information for first semester students

Help, I'm a first year student!
Welcome - we look forward to welcoming you to the University of Oldenburg!
All beginnings are difficult, so here are two important facts to reassure you:
-
You are not alone!
Several hundred students are starting their maths degree with you. You can trust us that you will support each other very quickly. - We will help you!
We have made it our mission to be there for students - right from the start! We too were once in your situation and felt disorientated and insecure, but let us show you: There's no need for that!
How and when do I start?
Because we want to help you with the start of your studies, we offer you various support programmes. We strongly recommend that you take part in some of them!
The offers depend on whether you are studying mathematics or elementary mathematics.
Mathematics
Subject Bachelor and two-subject Bachelor of Mathematics
Study start: preliminary course
Because the transition from school to studying mathematics is difficult for most first-year students, we organise a preparatory course.
We strongly recommend that you take part!
Elementary maths
Two-subject Bachelor of Elementary Mathematics
Start of studies: Orientation week
Your studies begin with an orientation week, during which you can settle in at the university and slowly find your way around, which is why we strongly recommend that you take part!
For those interested: Mentoring programme
While we offer a preliminary course for maths students, no preliminary course is required for elementary mathematics. However, to make it easier for first-year Elementary Mathematics students to get started at university, there is a mentoring programme in Elementary Mathematics parallel to the first semester, which you can take part in if you wish.
I am unsure.
Mathematics or elementary mathematics?
You must know whether you will be studying mathematics or elementary mathematics before you start your degree programme, as you can usually only be enrolled in one of the two subjects. If you are unsure, be sure to check your documents again to see whether it says Mathematics or Elementary Mathematics .
What is the difference between maths and elementary maths?
The choice of degree programme is determined by the career goal being pursued. In terms of content, the degree programmes differ significantly because elementary mathematics - as the name suggests - places a clear focus on the more elementary components of mathematics.
Mathematics can be studied in the following degree programmes:
- Subject Bachelor (extracurricular)
- Two-subject Bachelor's degree programme
- Teaching degree for grammar schools or vocational schools
- extracurricular career goal
The subject Elementary Mathematics can be started in the following degree programmes:
- Two-subject Bachelor's degree programme
- Teaching degree for primary, lower secondary or secondary modern schools
- Teacher training for special education
- extracurricular career goal
A later change is possible, but involves a certain amount of effort because you have to reapply and be accepted. In addition, you will have to catch up on the modules required for the other degree programme later.
As it often happens that first-year students want to study Elementary Mathematics but have applied for Mathematics by mistake or have not been accepted for Elementary Mathematics, we have already written some tips on this in our FAQ:
