Mentoring programme

The mentoring programme
for first-year students of elementary mathematics
The mentoring programme is intended to give first-year students of elementary mathematics the opportunity to make contact with experienced students in order to make the start of their studies and student life in Oldenburg easier. The mentees can also make contact with each other.
The mentors are contact persons who have all kinds of answers to questions that arise at the beginning of the degree programme. Various relevant topics are usually discussed in regular meetings, providing help for self-help.
The mentors and mentees are completely free to organise their time in the groups. It is up to you whether you meet regularly or maintain sporadic email contact. The programme is intended to be an introductory aid and to help first-semester students integrate better into the student body.
All mentors work on a voluntary basis.
Information for...
Who is the mentoring programme aimed at?
The mentoring programme is aimed at prospective elementary mathematics students to make it easier for them to start their studies and to establish contacts with each other.
The mentoring programme is not aimed at mathematics students, as the preliminary course already offers them a good transition between school and university as well as the opportunity to make contacts.
Is the number of participants limited?
The number of possible participants depends primarily on the number of mentors who want to volunteer for the mentoring programme.
In previous years, all those interested have been allocated one of the available places, but it still pays to be quick: we cannot guarantee that this year will be the same.
Important information and dates
for Mentoring 2025

The exact dates for the first meeting have already been set:
We will send you further information by email in good time, provided you have registered.
When and where can I register?
You can register here for this year's mentoring programme until 03.10.2025.
As long as not all places have been allocated, you can still register until the Wednesday of the orientation week.

What is the mentoring programme?
We are delighted that you are interested in our programme!
We, the student body for Mathematics and Elementary Mathematics, launched a new project in 2019: In the mentoring programme, first-semester students should have a contact person and also make new contacts with each other. Various topics are usually discussed in regular meetings to help students help themselves. Participants should also have the opportunity to contribute their own wishes. However, it is also possible for mentors to simply act as a point of contact for students. More specific preferences can be stated when applying.
What has changed compared to the first year?
It is now possible to set a focus according to which the first-year students and mentors are divided. They can indicate whether they mainly want to talk about university matters, socialise and go on activities or whether they would prefer to have just one contact person who can be contacted if necessary.
There is also the option of leading a group in pairs. You can also specify a preferred partner.
What requirements must I fulfil as a mentor?
Our mentors should be students of elementary mathematics who are enrolled in at least the 2nd bachelor's semester. As a mentor, you will look after a group of first-year students on your own or in pairs. We would like you to be reliable, for example by answering emails from your mentees and taking the time to maintain contact with them. How you realise this is entirely up to you. You design the programme for your group the way you want it.
You also don't have to worry about not being able to answer all the questions. Throughout the semester, you have the organisation team as your contact person, who you can contact at any time and who will help you. You also have the opportunity to obtain a certificate for your voluntary work, which you can attach to job applications, for example.
What happens at the preliminary meeting on 6 October?
We want to give all mentors the opportunity to get to know each other. We would also like to discuss organisational matters.
What happens during the info session?
First-year students receive centralised information, e.g. about the examination regulations.
What happens at the introductory meeting?
You get to know your group, exchange contact details and can discuss the further course of the programme.
What do I get for my work as a mentor?
Mentoring is an honorary position and unfortunately we do not have the opportunity to compensate you financially for your time and effort.
However, you can gain a lot of valuable experience and be a great help to many first-year students, who in our experience are very grateful.
You also have the opportunity to receive a certificate for your voluntary work, which you can attach to job applications, for example.
