Mathematics preparation course
To make the transition from school to university easier, we offer a preliminary course every year before the winter semester.
In addition to preparing you for subject-specific difficulties, the preliminary course is also ideal for making new friends who will accompany you throughout your studies. To this end, the first basics of selected university mathematics topics are taught in lecture-style presentations and exercises on the relevant content are worked on in practice groups.
The knowledge acquired in the preparatory course is not a prerequisite for the introductory courses of the maths degree programme, but makes it much easier to start your studies.
Why should I attend the preliminary course?

The preliminary course is for the degree programmes
- Subject Bachelor of Mathematics
- Two-subject Bachelor of Mathematics and
- Bachelor of Physics
and thus provides an ideal introduction to studying mathematics or physics.
First-year students of mathematics often have great difficulty adjusting to the requirements at university. This is mainly due to the fact that maths at university is fundamentally different from school maths: The level of abstraction as well as the speed of the lectures are higher and you have to prove mathematical statements independently on exercise slips.
This preliminary course in mathematics is not suitable for first-year students of other subjects that have mathematical components. There are separate preliminary courses for Natural Sciences or Computing Science!

What are the contents of the preliminary course?

The preliminary course covers the following fifteen topics over a total of eight days:
- What is maths? and propositional logic
- School mathematics I and set theory
- Quantifier logic and number domains
- Proof techniques I and proof techniques II
- Complete induction and functions and mappings I
- Functions andgraphs II and school maths II
- Functions andmappings III and problem solving
- Sequences and limits and revision quizzes
There are several preliminary maths courses at the University of Oldenburg.
Which one is suitable for me?
If you are planning to study maths or subject bachelor's physics
Subject Bachelor or two-subject Bachelor
...then you should attend the preliminary course in mathematics organised by the student body for mathematics and elementary mathematics , regardless of your second or minor subject. In this preliminary course, you will get to know your fellow students and be ideally prepared for studying mathematics at the University of Oldenburg!
The other preliminary courses are not suitable for you, even if you want to study physics or Computing Science as a second or minor subject, for example, because our mathematics preliminary course also covers the relevant content, but focuses more clearly on the study of mathematics.

If you are not planning to study maths or physics (subject bachelor)
Elementary Maths, Natural Sciences, Computing Science, ...
Then the mathematics preliminary course offered by the mathematics and elementary mathematics student body is not suitable for you.
- Are you planning to study elementary maths?
Unfortunately, there is no preliminary course for elementary maths students. However, a preparatory course is not required for your degree programme. With your maths knowledge from school, you are well prepared! If you still feel unsure, you can find another way to brush up on your school maths knowledge in the last paragraph!

- Are you planning to study a (different) natural science?
If so, the Institute of Physics organises a preliminary course in Mathematics that may be of interest to you! We would particularly recommend participation to all prospective physics students in the 2-subject Bachelor's programme!

How can I register for the preliminary course?
How do I get to the preliminary course?
The mathematics preliminary course takes place at the university's Wechloy campus.
When you arrive there on the first day of the preliminary course, tutors will welcome you in the entrance area and show you the way to the lecture theatre where the introductory lecture will take place.
Anreise mit dem Fahrrad
In Oldenburg - der Fahrradhauptstadt Deutschlands[Quelle] - und vor allem in Zeiten der Klimakrise ist das Verkehrsmittel der Wahl natürlich das Fahrrad.
Während der Campus Haarentor an der Kreuzung von Ammerländer Heerstraße und Uhlhornsweg sowohl leicht zu erreichen wie auch zu finden ist, versteckt sich der Campus Wechloy etwas weiter westlich.
Vom Campus Haarentor, aus Richtung Innenstadt bis aus Richtung Dietrichsfeld
Kommt ihr aus Richtung Innenstadt oder dem Gebiet zwischen Innenstadt und Dietrichsfeld, dann fahrt zunächst auf die Ammerländer Heerstraße und diese hoch in Richtung Nordwesten, bis ihr zum Campus Haarentor gelangt.
Von dort aus folgt ihr der Ammerländer Heerstraße weiter. Ihr biegt hinter dem Supermarkt auf der rechten Seite nach links in den Drögen-Hasen-Weg ab. Diesem folgt ihr, bis ihr kurz hinter der Straße „Hartenscher Damm” zur linken und den Volleyball-Plätzen auf der rechten Seite rechts in einen gepflasterten Weg einbiegt, welcher euch direkt zur Uni führt. Vor dem Gebäude sind viele Fahrradparkplätze sowie ein großer Hintereingang des Gebäudes, der aber ebenfalls direkt ins Foyer führt.
Aus Richtung Bloherfelde, Eversten
Aus vom Campus Wechloy gesehen südlicher Richtung kommend, fahrt ihr zunächst Richtung Norden bis zur Bloherfelder Straße. Von dieser biegt ihr in die Straße „Hartenscher Damm” ein, welcher ihr durchgehend folgt. Am Ende befindet sich die Kreuzung mit dem Drögen-Hasen-Weg, in welchen ihr links abbiegt. Bereits nach wenigen Metern hinter den Volleyballplätzen zur Rechten findet ihr auf der gleichen Seite einen gepflasterten Weg, der euch direkt auf die Uni zuführt. Vor dem Gebäude sind viele Fahrradparkplätze sowie ein großer Hintereingang des Gebäudes, der aber ebenfalls direkt ins Foyer führt.
Aus Richtung Wechloy, Wehnen, Bad-Zwischenahn
Kommt ihr aus nord-westlicher Richtung, so fahrt auf die Ammerländer Heerstraße und folgt dieser in Richtung Süden. An der Kreuzung mit einem Bekleidungsgeschäft auf der rechten Seite biegt ihr rechts in den Küpkersweg ein, welchem ihr bis über die Bahnschienen folgt. Seht ihr auf der rechten Seite ein großes weißes Gebäude (W32), dann kommt bald auf der linken Seite ein kleiner, gepflasterter Weg, welcher euch direkt zum Campus-Innenhof führt. Am Innenhof befinden sich bereits diverse Fahrradparkplätze, überquert ihr den Innenhof so findet ihr weitere auf der linken Seite.
Der Eingang des Gebäudes mit einer Glasfront bis zum Fußboden führt euch direkt ins Foyer.
Fahrradparkplätze
An vielen Stellen am Campus Wechloy gibt es kleinere Fahrradparkplätze, auf der abgebildeten Karte haben wir euch in blau die größten und wichtigsten eingezeichnet: Am Haupteingang, am Nebeneingang am Mathematik-Bereich, im Innenhof, vor W32, vor dem Physik-Bereich sowie vor dem Gebäude W16A.
Abkürzung gefällig?
Wer Lust auf ein kleines Abenteuer hat, der kann sich ja mal an der folgenden Abkürzung zwischen dem Campus Haarentor und dem Campus Wechloy probieren:
Den Campus Wechloy verlasst ihr auf dem Drögen-Hasen-Weg, der sich südlich der Sportplätze befindet. Ihr biegt vom Campus kommenden nach links auf den Drögen-Hasen-Weg und fahrt diesen weiter in Richtung Ammerländer Heerstraße, jedoch werdet ihr ab der Kreuzung Grotepool aufmerksam: Auf der rechten Seite führt hinter einer Auffahrt ein schmaler Weg an einem hohen Bretterzaun entlang - dort biegt ihr ein und folgt dem Weg durch einen kleinen Wald über eine Brücke (Achtung: Auf der Brücke ist es immer sehr rutschig!).
Dort angekommen blickt ihr auf das Mensagebäude und die Bibliothek. Geradeaus ist die Fahrradselbsthilfewerkstatt sowie ein Eingang in den Mensabereich. Links herum geht es in Richtung Hörsaalzentrum A14 und rechts abgebogen führt euch der Weg um das Gebäude herum zum Mensaeingang sowie zu den Hochschulsport-Angeboten
Anreise mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln
Mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln gelangt ihr vom ZOB mit der Buslinie 306 „Universität” zur Endhaltestelle „Campus Wechloy”.

Mit dem Auto erreicht ihr den Campus Wechloy an folgender Adresse:

I am unable to attend some days of the preliminary course. Can I still take part?
Yes, participation is still possible.
Scripts, exercise sheets and solutions will be uploaded during a pre-course day. This allows you to catch up on what you have missed at home. Although this is not a prerequisite, we can only recommend that you work on your own so that you are not hindered by gaps when learning the other topics.
