Prof. Dr. Jörn Hoppmann ist seit April 2019 Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Management an der Universität Oldenburg sowie Research Affiliate an der ETH Zürich. Darüber hinaus ist Prof. Hoppmann seit April 2023 Direktor des Departments Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaften.

Seine Venia Legendi für das Lehrgebiet Management erhielt Prof. Hoppmann im Jahr 2018 an der ETH Zürich, wo er in der Gruppe für Nachhaltigkeit und Technologie des Departments Management, Technologie und Ökonomie 2013 auch seine Doktorwürde erlangte. Seinen Diplomabschluss im Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen erwarb er 2009 an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig. Im Rahmen von Studium und Promotion absolvierte Prof. Hoppmann verschiedene Forschungsaufenthalte, unter anderem als Research Fellow und Associate an der Harvard University (Cambridge, USA) sowie als Visiting Researcher am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA), an der University of Waterloo (Ontario, Kanada), der IMD Business School (Lausanne, Schweiz) und der Universität Hamburg. Des Weiteren sammelte er praktische Erfahrung durch Praktika in verschiedenen Unternehmen, z.B. Porsche Consulting (Stuttgart) und The Boston Consulting Group (Frankfurt).

Die Forschung von Prof. Hoppmann ist in international führenden wissenschaftlichen Journalen - wie z.B. dem Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, dem Journal of Business Venturing oder Research Policy - erschienen und wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Nachwuchspreis des Verbands der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaftslehre (VHB), mit dem Best Paper Award der Division “Organizations and the Natural Environment” (ONE) der Academy of Management sowie der ETH Medaille für die beste Promotion am Department Management, Technologie und Ökonomie der ETH Zürich im Jahr 2013. Für den Kurs "Einführung in die BWL" erhielt Prof. Hoppmann im Jahr 2018 den Preis der Lehre für die beste Lehrveranstaltung der Universität Oldenburg im Studienjahr 2017/2018. Darüber hinaus wurde seine Forschung durch Stipendien verschiedener Organisationen gefördert, z.B. die Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, den Schweizerischen Nationalfonds, den Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst und die Dr.-Jürgen-Ulderup-Stiftung. Prof. Hoppmann ist Mitglied des Editorial Board der Fachzeitschrift "Organization & Environment" sowie der „GRONEN Reading Group.”

Die Forschungsinteressen von Prof. Hoppmann bewegen sich an der Schnittstelle von strategischem Management, Nachhaltigkeit und Innovation. Die Forschung konzentriert sich dabei auf die Beantwortung von drei Kernfragen: (1) Wie beeinflusst das institutionelle Umfeld von Unternehmen (insbesondere regulatorische Anreize) strategische Entscheidungen und organisationales Lernen im Kontext Nachhaltigkeit? (2) Welche organisationsinternen Strukturen und Governance-Mechanismen ermöglichen und fördern strategischen und organisatorischen Wandel in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit? (3) Wie beeinflussen kognitive Variablen wie Aufmerksamkeit, Framing und Identität Unternehmensstrategien im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit? Empirisch fokussiert die Forschung von Prof. Hoppmann auf den Energie- und Mobilitätssektor, insbesondere erneuerbare Energien, Energieversorger, Energieffizienz und Elektromobilität. Aktuelle Projekte beschäftigen sich darüber hinaus mit strategischem Wandel im Kontext der digitalen Transformation sowie Unternehmensstrategien im IT-Sektor.
