Opening up Virtual Moshpits: Music Scenes and In-game Concerts in Fortnite and Minecraft (Arbeitstitel)

Abstract

This project intends to investigate the sociabilities around in-game concerts and music scenes inside the Massively Multiplayer Online Games Fortnite and Minecraft. By comparing two of the most popular MMO’s at the current moment, it proposes to analyse how these social encounters between gamers shape their social environments, possibly creating virtual music scenes that affect their life-worlds. In Minecraft, these scenes have propelled the popularization of the hyperpop music genre, which will also be a topic of interest to this thesis. Inspired by Cultural and Game Studies literature, this research will adapt the music scenes concept to the digital aspect of social interaction found inside games by applying Ludomusicology and Virtual Ethnography writing as methodological guides, and Phenomenology and Intersectionality as tools for analysing the results.
