Neurophysiological and psychological aspects of practice-based motor rehabilitation

Sa. 9.00-9.50 Uhr

Annette Sterr, PhD
School of Psychology, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK GU27XH

The discovery of neuroplasticity in the adult human brain, together with the characterization of the mechanisms driving this plasticity, have sparked a paradigm shift in the conceptualization of neurological rehabilitation in general and motor rehabilitation in particular. This has led to the development of new theory-driven treatment concepts and evidence-based approaches, which effectively improve motor recovery in acquired brain injuries such as stroke. However, despite these positive developments treatment implementation into clinical practice, and the availability of effective interventions for more severe motor deficits remain challenging. The talk will highlight the theoretical and empirical advancements in motor rehabilitation, discuss the challenges for more severely impaired patients, and outline ideas for improving clinical practice.
