Project
Labour is an omnipresent topic that is debated at length in public and private, often very emotionally. But what exactly does work mean? The meaning and function of the concept of labour is not only subject to historical change - even in the here and now, people define it in very different ways. At several small locations in the centre of Oldenburg, the exhibition combines various artistic and art-scientific perspectives on a topic that is as complex as it is existential. Common work situations and contexts are scrutinised and juxtaposed. Facilitated by the limited access and behavioural conventions, every viewer is invited not only to reflect on the presented work (perspectives), but also to comment on and discuss them.
Addendum
At the invitation of the students, Stephan Kurr created a graphic for the exhibition section "Arbeit / Freizeit / Müssigang" in the canteen of the "Öffentliche Versicherung", Oldenburg, Staugraben 11. Against the backdrop of its exhibition location, the graphic reflects and comments on quotations by Dumas, Flaubert, Friedell, Brandt and Müntefering, which were used there in the canteen in the run-up to the exhibition in order to enter into dialogue with the canteen visitors.
Three days after it was hung in the canteen, the board of Öffentliche Versicherung Oldenburg had the graphic removed from the exhibition. There is no official statement, but the students were informed by the head of general administration that they did not want the artist's personal statements in front of the image of the insurance building and the canteen to be seen by their own employees and canteen guests during their lunch break.
However, the students were allowed to carry and show the graphic during guided tours of the exhibition.
The graphic in DinA-0 format is available as a free download on the exhibition homepage:
