Between word and image (2017)
Oldenburg. A student exhibition of graphic novels entitled "Between Word and Image" opens on Tuesday, 10 October at 6 p.m. in the foyer of the University Library (Haarentor campus, Uhlhornsweg 49-55). Students from the Institute of Art and Visual Culture at the University of Oldenburg have developed the works under the direction of artist Natascha Kaßner. Graphic novels bridge the gap between literary narratives and picture stories. They are now a recognised artistic genre - and by no means only of interest to children or comic readers.
There were no guidelines for the content of the illustrated stories. "Some stories tell of my own life, others are fictitious. In terms of design, there is the whole range from pen and ink drawings on paper to watercolours and also graphics drawn on the computer using a drawing pad," explains Natascha Kaßner. Hendrik Meyer takes the reader on a rave in the demilitarised zone of the West Bank; Julia Buschhaus tells the story of the end of a childhood due to her parents' divorce. In Loreen Koch's work, an elephant solves chocolate thefts, while Kai Janssen takes the TV series "Narcos" as his model and tells the story of the Colombian drug lord Escobar. A total of eleven completed projects will be on display.
In addition to the finished books, a selection of the original graphics, workbooks, sketches and notes will also be presented. They offer a fascinating insight into the genesis and production process of the individual works.
The exhibition is on display until 3 November: Mondays to Fridays from 8.00 am to midnight and at weekends from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm. Admission is free.
