Things in themselves (2025)
Things in themselves (2025)
"We can never fully recognise the things themselves"- An art exhibition on the
(im)possibility of aesthetic approaches to things in themselves.
The exhibition Things in themselves is dedicated to the question of an artistic approach to the
access to the Kantian things in themselves. This question seems particularly interesting, as Immanuel Kant uses the term "thing in itself" to describe precisely that which cannot be given to us in any perception. Things in themselves are the unavailable, which can at best be thought, but never recognised.
In the context of art, the boundaries are blurred here and the things themselves are examined in an expansive installation. While a mirrored room invites visitors to reflect on themselves in a variety of ways, the work "Ding an sich?, a natural stone, confronts them with its mere placement in space.
The exhibition will open on 17 January 2025 at 6 pm at Raum auf Zeit in Achternstraße 22 in Oldenburg. Admission is free for the entire duration of the exhibition and the premises are barrier-free. The creative interim use was made possible by the RAUM AUF ZEIT project. The exhibition is being organised as part of an art project at the University of Oldenburg.
Further information, initial sneak peaks and documentation of the working process can be found in advance on the exhibition's Instagram page (@thingsinthemselves_ol).
