Old masters seen anew

Students of the subject Art and Media interpret paintings from the State Museum of Art and Cultural History. Exhibition under the direction of Sabine Wallach in the museum education department at Oldenburg Palace, 25 August 2011 - 15 February 2012

A selection of paintings from the State Museum's collection of Old Masters has inspired students of the subject Art and Media at the CvO University of Oldenburg to create their own artistic work. The examination of paintings from past eras led to very different interpretations, using aesthetic methods such as experimental cameraless photography (photogram and cliché verre), but also sculptures and installation boxes.

The Old Masters offered the students a wide range of possibilities for interpretation and were thus triggers for individual work processes. The main focus was on questions of reduction or illusion, but also alienation in space and surface.
The diverse approaches to painting of the past reflect media and social experiences, but also cultural and political influences of the present.
Working from old masters and utilising current artistic strategies has thus led to exciting new interpretations.

Further information on the works shown here can be found in the legend.
