Subjective photography, which found its centre in the fotoform group founded in 1949, expanded the creative possibilities of photography in the post-war period with essential approaches. Otto Steinert, Siegfried Lauterwasser, Peter Keetman, Heinz Halke-Hajek and Kilian Breier all experimented with photographic techniques, reinterpreting and reinterpreting reality. Using negative prints, photograms or chemigrams, they have created autonomous pictorial worlds, some of which are completely detached from empirically tangible reality and go as far as abstraction. Works by these artists, which can be seen in the exhibition Schupmann Collection - Photography in West Germany at the castle, were the inspiration for the art students. Over the course of a semester, they learnt new things about photography and were able to explore different techniques in order to experiment in the darkroom without a camera or negative. In this way, image creation became image discovery. They worked on the basis of photographic materials with light-sensitive black and white photographic paper, photographic chemicals and the necessary light sources. The light itself became the subject of the picture: it can be refracted and directed or leave traces on light-sensitive material like a brush. This infinite variety of creative possibilities can be seen in the workshop exhibition Photogenics.
