Subjective photography, which found its centre in the fotoform group founded in 1949, significantly expanded the creative possibilities of photography in the post-war period. Otto Steinert, Siegfried Lauterwasser, Peter Keetman, Heinz Halke-Hajek and Kilian Breier all experimented with photographic techniques, reinterpreting and reimagining reality. Through negative prints, photograms and chemigrams, they created autonomous visual worlds, some of which break completely away from empirically perceptible reality and venture into abstraction. Works by the artists mentioned, which are on display in the exhibition ‘Schupmann Collection – Photography in West Germany ’ at the castle, served as inspiration for the art students. Over the course of a semester, they rediscovered photography and were able to explore different techniques to experiment in the darkroom without a camera or a negative. In this way, image production became image invention. The work was carried out using photographic materials, including light-sensitive black-and-white photographic paper, photographic chemicals and the necessary light sources. Light itself became the subject of the image: it can be refracted and directed, or leave traces on light-sensitive material like a paintbrush. This infinite variety of creative possibilities is on display in the workshop exhibition ‘Photogenics’.
