"We'll talk about art later"
Exhibition from 21 May to 14 June at the Aquarium
a new, experimental exhibition format of the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art Oldenburg
Loosely based on the quote "We'll talk about art later" from a lecture by Rolf Strobel at the Göttingen Film Festival in 1953, students are exploring the political action potential of film in contrast to its aesthetic components. The group of students from the Master of Education, Art and Media Studies and Integrated Media programmes compared their research into historical and contemporary positions with the prevailing view in the 1960s that film had a primarily social and political function.
The questions of cultural identity, museum representation, possible parallels between performative and aesthetic elements in protest movements and in the visual arts and cultural politics are addressed in film essays and reports. In the installation, the students ask and answer the following questions with stagings and observations in the episodic video collage: What and who was and is avant-garde today?
With contributions from: Kirsten Darby, Anke Fischer, Jennifer Irmscher, Jacqueline Jöhle, Michael Rüger, Christian Sanders, Lucia Schaub, Sarah Melanie Schmeller, Julia Wempen, Nina Wenzlaff, Hajo Wildeboer, Lena Withot and video collectives of performative, artistic media practice, directed by Anke Fischer.
As part of the opening event on 20 May, graphic designer Jacquelin Jöhle from Berlin spoke about her work for the RAW.ev association, a self-managed art and culture venue in Berlin Friedrichhain, where she also has her studio. Jacquelin Jöhle synthesises her projects within a conglomerate of public relations, cultural politics, artistic work and protest culture. In the day-to-day business of socio-cultural utilisation and the preservation of RAW.ev, Jacquelin Jöhle develops visual communication strategies in dealing with users, residents, politics, cultural management and the art world.
Talking about art later means in this sense - first of all working to ensure that affordable studio and exhibition space is available, on a voluntary basis - only then can artistic production and publication take place.
