From revolt to space flight

Historical events as a starting point for artistic work

Exhibition in lecture theatre building A14
13.10.-17.11. 16

In the course "From revolt to space flight" (WS 15/16), students developed artistic works on events from contemporary history, whereby the choice of media was left up to them.

The initial task was to develop a series of photo collages on a historical event, with the students' own bodies playing a role as protagonists alongside accessories and backgrounds they had developed themselves. On display in the exhibition is the realisation by Kevin Thom, Teresa Tjards and Daniel Schoch, who together recreated a paying customer's fictitious trip to the moon.

The same group has developed installations on the NSA affair, using very different materials: A marionette symbolises the rule of the major media protagonists, a telephone can be used to follow tapped conversations and a large installation shows the global power of the secret services.

In 2015, North Korea's ruler Kim Yong Un had the clock adjusted by 30 minutes for political reasons, for which Thao Bin Trach developed a conceptual video. Sarah Rosenbohm's installation, on the other hand, tells the story of her friend Dada, who fought as a child soldier in Africa. Annabel Mertens' collage of images with airport scenes reflects the mobility of today's society. Lisa Gaidamowitsch and Sabrina Murr have recreated the World Trade Center in miniature, thus recalling 11 September 2001.

Sina Cobi combines a 1972 press photo of a girl fleeing a napalm attack in Vietnam with psychedelic paintings from the 1970s. Friederike Kirschner establishes a connection between the unexplained death of Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko and the KGB, developing drawings in the spirit of Marc Lombardi, among others.
