Counting number fields

Abstract: In this talk we consider the problem of counting number fields of bounded degree and discriminant. This topic has a venerable lineage beginning with Gauss, and continuing right up to the present with work of Fields Medalist Manjul Bhargava.

I shall discuss the history and background of this problem and also present some of my own additions to the area, such as studying the distribution of number fields that fail the Hasse norm principle (joint work with Christopher Frei and Rachel Newton).
